Position:          Youth Specialty Class Instructor

 

Supervisors:   Youth and Family Director/Youth and Family Coordinator

Youth Specialty Classes include: art, music, language, dance, drama, or any other type of creative and interactive class for children ages 6-12. Position starts in the fall 2008.

Prerequisites:

Candidate must be at least 18 years of age and possess at least 6 months experience working with children 0-12 years of age.  Staff person will be required to attend YMCA Child Abuse Prevention Training as well as CPR & First Aid.

General Responsibilities:

Provide a safe and positive experience for children in the program. This includes interaction with children 0-14 years of age and working with parents.

    Possesses the ability to deliver outstanding experiences for members, participants, internal customers and others; builds warm and supportive relationships; consistently greets and assists everyone in a positive way; strives to provide service that will exceed expectations; responds to concerns and complaints in away that makes each person feel valued; initiates action for prompt resolution; looks for better ways to serve and involve members, participants, internal customers and others.

  4. Works Productively: Demonstrates responsible actions; consistently performs duties in a safe and conscientious manner within the agreed upon timeframe; follows standards, policies, and procedures; is reliable and consistently punctual; actively participates in staff meetings, required trainings, and other work related activities; uses good judgment; uses YMCA resources appropriately and efficiently.

  1. Specific Responsibilities:

Set Up:

Have all equipment/supplies ready and checked at the start of class time.  Be well prepared for the day’s activity/project.  Make sure participants are comfortable with you.  Your mood and behavior shapes the behavior of your participants.

Task Assigning:

Assign level appropriate skills.  Be sure the skill is not too easy or too advanced for your class.  Be flexible and be prepared to modify as necessary.

Know your Students:

Each student may need to perform a different set of tasks to learn and improve.  You must know was to introduce new skills and know which ways will work best for the individual you are working with.

Progress:

Build on what the child already knows and can accomplish.  This really applies if the child has been enrolled in the same or similar program before.

Feedback:      

Give positive feedback, motivation and discipline when necessary.  Keep control of the class.  Be able to give corrective feedback to create effective movements.

Care and Supervision:

Call the child by name; interact frequently at their eye level.  Treat the child with dignity and respect.  Guide and discipline in a positive manner.  Greet parents as they drop/pick up children on program.  Share with them details of child’s time in the program.  Demonstrate and model qualities of YMCA Character Development, Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility.

General Procedures:

 

1.                  Read, know, follow and enforce emergency procedures and all YMCA policies, rules and health codes applicable to the YMCA environment.

2.                  Maintain professional appearance and attitude.  Adhere to dress code; staff shirt, jog pants or cottons, knee length shorts, sneakers, ID badge.  No spandex, sweats or denim.

3.                  Take responsibility for scheduled hours and if necessary, follow the appropriate substitution procedures.

 

Effect on End Results:

  • Both child and parent will enjoy participating in the Specialty Class programs.  Parents will know children are safe and secure.

  • Children will have the opportunity to learn positive character development traits including sharing, fair play, and respect for the other children.
