Teacher Assistant

Supervisor:            Childcare Director

Prerequisites:

  1.  Be physically able to work with young children and perform all duties as required in the day-to-day activities.

  2. Have a high school education and meet the minimum requirements set by DCFS.

  3. Completion of necessary paperwork including a background check, finger printing, physical examination and TB skin test procedures must be on file.

  4. Complete 15 hours of in-service per year and submit documentation to director.

  5. Current First Aid and CPR certified in order to hire.

General responsibilities:

Under the supervision of the appropriate teacher and in harmony with the Christian nature and purpose of the established policies and goals of the Heritage YMCA Group, the Teacher Assistant will assist with the planning, development, and implementation of all classroom activities.  The Teacher Assistant will have specific assignments that provide for children's social, physical, emotional, and cognitive development, and holds primary  responsibility for the education, health, welfare, and safety of the children in the programs.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Staff Training

  • Program Development

  • Site Specific Responsibilities

Skill Development and Progression

  1. Child Abuse Prevention

  2. Working with Pre-Schoolers

  3. Principles of Child Care

  4. Other designated training

Staff Training

  1. Attend all staff meetings and training events as scheduled

Program Development

  1. Assist in creating and implementing innovative activities for the child care center

  2. Support the mission and philosophy of the YMCA and reflect these principles in your actions and promotion of all YMCA programs.

General Responsibilities:

  1. Assist with the planning, supervision, and implementation of the program in accordance with the goals, philosophies, and policies of the YMCA Child Care Center.

  2. Responsible for the safety of the children in the program at all times.

  3. Prepare learning materials as requested by the teacher.

  4. Attend staff meetings when requested.

  5. Support the program and the goals of the YMCA.

  6. Assist with the appearance and cleanliness of the classroom, and maintain the quality of supplies, equipment and materials in the classroom and storage areas.

  7. Report any relevant information about children or staff to the teacher.

  8. Play with and interact with children during playtime activities.

  9. Assume any other duties as requested by the Child Care Director.

  10. Become familiar with and follow guidelines set by DCFS, Fire Marshal, Health Department, YMCA, and Child Care Director.
