LIGHTS ON AFTERSCHOOL
(Nationwide event sponsored by JCPenney
Afterschool Fund)
The Y Safe 'n Sound program run by the Heritage YMCA Group
serving Aurora, Naperville and Oswego communities, is a before and
after-school program with sites in over 35 elementary schools in
Naperville and Aurora.
Celebrating its 25th anniversary of service to the community this
2008-2009 academic year, the program currently has over 900 children
participating in the combined morning and after-school program, and
many receive fee assistance from the YMCA so that they can attend.
The children have worked very hard to get ready for the week-long
celebration of Lights on Afterschool, October 20-24th and are
very excited about it.
Lights on Afterschool is the only nationwide event
celebrating after-school programs. The purpose is to bring attention
to the need for high-quality after-school programs that provide a
solution for working parents, where an environment for learning is
created and respected, and it offers a safe and fun place for kids
to go that is familiar to them.
Locally, Welch, Kendall, Meadow Glens, Naper, and White Eagle
Elementary schools will feature a host of fun activities for Y Safe
'n Sound program participants, their parents and siblings, school
teachers and community leaders who are all encouraged to stop by and
see first-hand how an after-school program that teaches the YMCA
four core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility, can
so positively impact kids.
