Oswego, IL…..The Oswego Family YMCA will soon occupy over 22,000 square
feet of space in the Oswego 308 Center (formerly Old Traughber Junior High
School). It will boast a group exercise center, a wellness center, a teen
center and game room, a state-of-the-art double court sports
center/gymnasium with an indoor track, music/art/dance and drama studios,
free weight room, locker rooms, multi-purpose rooms as well as use of the
athletic fields on the south side of the building.
By the grand opening date of 8/31/09, officials expect the facility at
160 E. Washington St. to have more than 500
memberships and by the end of 2010, approximately 1000 memberships. This
number includes Oswego Family YMCA members enjoying the current
Mason Square facility and many new folks in the community that will begin
enjoying "An All New" YMCA
membership experience at 160 E. Washington St. beginning 8/31/09. |
"The support we have received from the community during the relocation
and expansion project has been tremendous. Acquiring this new space is an
example of a true partnership with Superintendent Dr. David Behlow, the
school board, and the Village of
Oswego. We are excited to have a safe place for children, teens and
families to gather and grow in spirit, mind and body," said Brent Finlay,
the Executive Director of the Oswego Family YMCA.
“The YMCA provides an expanded opportunity for recreation for our
community’s families. At the Y, there’s something for everyone. I’m
especially excited about the Teen Center— it will be an environment to
provide a healthy alternative for our youth and is greatly needed in
Oswego," said Tom Beerntsen, President and CEO, Heritage YMCA Group.
The YMCA will offer recreational and instructional programs at the new
location to include: after-school youth programs; wellness programs for
youth, teens and adults; parent-child programs; aquatics; youth sports;
Youth & Government for teens; babysitting
for children while parents exercise or participate in programs;
summer and holiday day camps; and special community-based events such as
Healthy Kids Day® and America On the Move Week. The YMCA looks forward to
continued collaborations in the community to deliver values-based
programming in Oswego, IL.
On Saturday, September 19th, the community is invited to attend
a grand opening celebration of the new Oswego Family YMCA. The community
celebration, free and open to the public, will run from 10am- 4pm,
starting with a ribbon cutting and key messages from YMCA officials,
followed by a variety of YMCA sponsored activities including youth sports
demonstrations, fun inflatables for children, drawing for free family
memberships and programs, high school choral group, light edibles,
refreshments and more. Attendees can also receive information about YMCA
programs and the benefits of membership.
