Philosophy
Our preschoolers have many opportunities to grow and explore. We offer our children a fun-filled learning experience:
- Through play and guided activities children learn beginning word sounds, rhymes, songs, and games.
- Using classroom discovery areas, children learn basic concepts in science, math, creative arts, cooking, home living and blocks.
- Every activity uses learning goals and objectives to support an age-appropriate, exploration-based learning environment.
- Assessment tools are linked to goals and objectives and are shared with the parents.
- Curriculum materials emphasize basic math concepts, science, music, art, finger-plays, poems, and chants.
- Discovery areas are used to provide opportunities for exploration and choice, based on the child's interest.
Educational preschool at the Heritage YMCA Group is a time of exploring:
- Literacy-letter of the week, journal writing, songs and rhymes
- Math-understanding numbers and quantities, sorting, estimating, graphing, sequencing, patterning, measuring, and problem solving.
- Science- exploration, experimentation, observation, documentation, and problem solving
- Social-Emotional Development- working together, respect for others, independence and responsibility.
- Physical Development- enhancing large and fine-motor skills
- To fulfill our YMCA Mission- To enhance the quality of life for families through programs reflecting Christian principles to build healthy spirit, mind, body for all.
Program Goals
- To provide a warm, stimulating environment, for learning and having fun
- To encourage children's awareness of human diversity and acceptance of differences in others
- To demonstrate and teach character development values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility
- To increase self-confidence and independence and to strengthen leadership skills
- To stimulate an awareness of emotions and feelings and to assist children in learning constructive ways to express themselves.
The curriculum is planned to promote fun and learning for your child, as we strive to support the needs and desires of the families in our program. An important goal in our program is to encourage healthy growth in spirit, mind, and body.
